Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators (RACMA)

The Fellowship Training Program (FTP) is an integrated learning model divided into four key domains:

• ‘Health system science’ – addresses ‘the medical expert’;
• ‘Medical management practice’ – addresses ‘the medical manager’ and ‘the communicator’
• ‘Research training’ – addresses ‘the scholar’, and
• ‘Personal and professional leadership development’ – addresses ‘the collaborator’, ‘the advocate’, ‘the professional’ and ‘the leader’.

Each of the Domains incorporates one or more of the College Curriculum’s eight role competencies and has a program of formative assessment activities and summative tasks, including oral examinations, training workshops, webinars, tutorials, written assignments and oral presentations.

To join the RACMA Fellowship Training Program (FTP), applicants must meet the following criteria:

1. An undergraduate medical degree from a recognised Australian or New Zealand university or equivalent.
2. Current general or specialist medical registration in Australia or New Zealand.
3. A minimum of three years full time clinical experience involving direct patient care.
4. A medical management position. This may be a training post or a substantive position that will allow the Candidate to develop the appropriate medical management competencies. This post will normally be in Australia or New Zealand.

Key Dates

Applications for Fellowship Training Program open in August and close on 31st October. Applications are made online and the link can be found on the website. The academic year commences in February.

Key dates for Candidates in the training program are provided in the RACMA training program calendar.

There are two exam periods per year for RACMA candidates. There are trial exams and the oral exams (only for eligible final year candidates).  These are held in August and October.

Placement Requirements

A requirement of the RACMA Fellowship Training Program is that Candidates complete the equivalent of three years full-time supervised medical management practice in the workplace under observation to foster and enhance information for reflection and improvement in skill development. 

Candidates must be in an accredited training post for the duration of their training. The process of accrediting a training post takes place between the health setting and RACMA. Further information about the application process to have a post accredited. Applications are made by the relevant supervisor at the health setting.
