Overview
The MBChB is a six-year undergraduate programme including Year 1 of the Bachelor of Health Sciences or the Bachelor of Science (Biomedical Science). During the early years of the MBChB, students study the basic medical and health sciences while being introduced to professional and clinical aspects of medical practice.
Study in MBChB Years 2 and 3 is entirely based in Auckland. From Year 4, students predominantly learn in hospital and community environments, with rotating study in a number of disciplines for much of the year. Students are required to complete at least one year of study outside the area of the Auckland District Health Boards during Years 4, 5 and 6.

Graduate entry courses are bachelor degree or Masters level courses that you can’t enter straight from school. You can only study them if you already have a degree.
Applicants may apply for the MBChB programme as a graduate after successfully completing at least a bachelors level degree of any New Zealand University. The degree must have been completed on a fulltime basis within five years of the current application and be obtained from an approved New Zealand university (not Polytechnics/Institutes of Technology).
Applicants must complete the UMAT exam in the year of application.

Entry Criteria
MAPAS applicants applying to MBChB may be invited to attend a MAPAS Specialty Interview. Offer of a MAPAS Specialty Interview is dependent on the Grade Point Average obtained from either the first year of the BHSc or BSc Biomedical Sciences or a completed degree, submission of an MH04 form and completion of the UMAT exam. The overall selection into the course is based on an applicant’s performance in UMAT, their academic marks, and the outcome of the MAPAS Specialty Interview process.
Preparation Course
Yes, Hikitia Te Ora – Certificate in Health Sciences (CertHSc). The CertHSc is a one year foundation programme aimed at bridging Māori and Pacific students from secondary school or from the community into programmes offered by the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences. MAPAS eligibility will be determined following receipt of a completed MH04 form in addition to a formal application to a FMHS programme at the University of Auckland. CertHSc applicants must complete a General MAPAS Interview. Successful completion of the CertHSc provides University Entrance and CertHSc graduates can apply to the Bachelor of Health Sciences or the Bachelor of Science (Biomedical Sciences) programmes as a pathway to MBChB application. Acceptance into undergraduate programmes is dependent on the Grade Point Average obtained within the CertHSc.

Indigenous Secondary School Recruitment Programme
The Whakapiki Ake Project (WAP) is a recruitment programme that actively engages with rangatahi Māori enrolled in secondary schools to promote health as a career and entry into Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences’ professional programmes. WAP offers exposure to health career options, assistance for students to apply to the FMHS and some financial support for successful applicants. Mature students may also apply. You are eligible for WAP if you have verified indigenous New Zealand Māori whakapapa/ancestry and are a citizen or permanent resident of New Zealand.

All applicants can only have two attempts at applying to the MBChB programme at the University of Auckland.
It is highly recommended that applicants wishing to enter into MBChB via the undergraduate/MAPAS pathway apply for their first year of bachelor study under MAPAS via submission of an MH04 form. Applicants may be invited to attend a General MAPAS Interview (held in December of the year prior to intended year of study). This interview process will provide advice on the best starting point for academic study for those wishing to pursue a health career available within the FMHS at the UoA (that includes MBChB).

MAPAS
MAPAS is available to FMHS applicants with indigenous Māori or Pacific whakapapa/ancestry. MAPAS provides both admission into, and support during, study within the Certificate in Health Sciences, Nursing, Pharmacy, Medicine and Health Sciences programmes of the faculty. MAPAS seeks to provide a supportive environment where students, their whānau/family and staff accept a commitment to academic achievement within a Māori/Pacific context.
Tuākana
Tuākana, based in the Faculty of Science is a mentoring and academic support programme designed to help Māori and Pacific students achieve the best possible grades via workshops, study groups and sessions with tutors and mentors.
