Overview
The Flinders Medical School was the first in Australia to develop a 4 year graduate entry medical program in 1996 as an alternative to traditional 5-6 year courses for school leavers. This was an opportunity to rethink curriculum design and the way in which students are selected. Our approach has since been taken up around the world. Now the majority of Medical School places in Australia are graduate-entry, and Flinders graduate entry course has been renamed a Doctor of Medicine (MD). There are opportunities for undergraduate study, pathways and support through Flinders University for Indigenous students.

Graduate entry courses are bachelor degree or Masters level courses that you can’t enter straight from school. You can only study them if you already have a degree. For medicine in Australia, and depending on the university, this degree can be either be in any field or must be a specific bachelors degree. Graduate entry medical degrees are shorter than undergraduate medical courses. The reason they’re shorter is that the university can assume that you’ve already developed the ability to learn effectively at university level and that you have an understanding of the basic sciences.

Based on your application, outcome of an interview and your participation in the Preparation for Medicine Program.
Preparation Course
The Preparation for Medicine Program (PMP) is designed to introduce Indigenous applicants to the reality to studying medicine at Flinders University. The content focusses on skills central to the medical course to maximise the preparedness of all applicants and build a supportive cohort.
The second part of the PMP allows students to participate in an online science program FUELS (Flinders University Extended Learning in Sciences). This program allows students to study a range of basic science concepts which are useful in the Doctor of Medicine (MD).
The PMP is a critical component in assessing an applicant’s readiness for successfully completing the four year medical program. PMP participants will be assessed on their academic performance, teamwork, psychosocial factors and communication. Once the PMP completed, an applicant is considered on the basis of their total application. Applicants who are deemed ‘ready’ to start medicine will be offered a place in the medical course.

Additional Information
- Indigenous graduates who wish to apply through the IES should apply directly to the University.
- Flinders University in Adelaide still retain a sub-quota of up to 5 Indigenous places for applicants who decide to sit the GAMSAT and apply directly through the University but not through the IES.
- For IES applications, applicants need to complete a form outlining relevant education, work and community service history, together with referee’s reports and documentation of Indigenous descent.
- Short-listed candidates will be invited to attend a panel interview designed to assess the applicant’s personal qualities. It is the same interview used for all graduate entrants into the course with an additional assessment of “Readiness to Study Medicine”.
