Overview
The MD is a postgraduate medical program designed to produce highly skilled doctors capable of meeting future medical challenges in a wide variety of settings.
Years 1 and 2 combine biomedical sciences, public health, medical ethics and clinical skills training in a case-based learning context, focused around a series of patient-centred cases, each designed to highlight principles and issues in health and disease. Early patient contact, clinical reasoning and research training are embedded to develop advanced clinical skills and medical knowledge required for evidence-based clinical practice.
In Years 3 and 4 clinical placements are organised around 10 core medical disciplines delivered across 11 clinical schools (hospitals) in Queensland, Brunei and United States.

Graduate entry courses are bachelor degree or Masters level courses that you can’t enter straight from school. You can only study them if you already have a degree. For medicine in Australia, and depending on the university, this degree can be either be in any field or must be a specific bachelors degree. Graduate entry medical degrees are shorter than undergraduate medical courses. The reason they’re shorter is that the university can assume that you’ve already developed the ability to learn effectively at university level and that you have an understanding of the basic sciences.

An interview by the Selection Committee Panel will assess: consistency in employment and academic pursuits; employment experience; academic abilities; personal interests; self-discipline; family support mechanisms and supporting documents from referees.

Your application should contain a formal letter to Manager, Student Services, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit, proof of identify as an Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander, a personal Resume (including referees, qualifications, evidence of achievements and experience), an official University Academic Transcripts for degree studies and a brief statement outlining reasons for wanting to study medicine. All applications are reviewed by the School of Medicine Indigenous Medical Student Selection Committee and suitable applicants will be invited for an interview.

Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (ATSIS) Unit has a major responsibility for facilitating and encouraging the access, participation and retention of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students at the University of Queensland. To this end, there are staff in the Unit who assist students with academic matters such as choosing subjects, accessing literature, computers and other resources. Staff also assist with personal matters that impact upon student’s studies. It is a primary objective of Unit staff to encourage students to develop successful and independent learning habits.
In Learning, the ATSIS Unit facilitates a case management approach to student retention, progression and graduation. Staff in the ATSIS Unit work with the UQ community to provide a range of professional services and academic support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Students from pre-enrolment through to graduation, including:
- assistance with admission to the University, including information on the range of tertiary programs available, tertiary preparation programs and alternative entry pathways.
- orientation programs for new students to assist with the transition to University life and study.
- advice and support for students experiencing personal and academic difficulties.
- advice on scholarships, prizes, and student support payments.
- assistance in career development and planning, including information on securing cadetships, work experience and graduate opportunities.
- learning support and advice, including workshops, group sessions, tutorial programs, workshops and individual consultations.
In addition, the ATSIS Unit hosts a number of events and activities throughout the academic year to introduce potential students to the University experience and assist current students with University life and study.
The ATSIS Unit has offices on the St Lucia, Ipswich and Gatton campuses and remote assistance is provided to students at other UQ campuses or locations.
